Who is 11 Foundation?
The 11 Foundation was created in honor of Nick Ventura, a brain injury survivor, to help support other families with pediatric traumatic brain injuries and the medical expenses they occur during the recovery process. The mission of the 11 Foundation is to identify and support those families who are looking for resources, guidance, and financial assistance during the rehabilitation phase of recovery. In this way, we aim to help Traumatic Brain Injury survivors reach their full potential. Patients of Traumatic Brain Injury and their families face very complex financial issues. Life changes instantly when someone experiences a traumatic brain injury, and the first thoughts and actions are focused on the patient, their survival and recovery. But with treatment comes costs.
Nick's has a Favorite Number!
Nick was snowboarding with friends in Ellicottville, NY at Holimont Ski Resort on February 19, 2011. He was on a blue diamond which would be a very easy run for him. We're not completely sure of all the details, but he was found unconscious near some trees. He was wearing a helmet and this most likely saved his life. His friends did not see him at the bottom of the run and began to look for him.
Ski patrol had found him in the meantime. The winds were too strong for life flight and he was taken via ambulance to Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. He had a fractured skull and four significant contusions in his brain. He was considered to be a major head trauma case and we continued to follow the medical steps and therapy necessary to treat that injury. Nick was born on November 11 and his favorite number is 11. Nick no longer receives therapy, but continues to show improvement. Nick is currently a sophomore at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio.
The 11 Foundation was created in honor of Nick and to help support other families with pediatric acquired TBI's and the medical expenses they occur during the recovery process. 11 Foundation would also like to educate young people and their families about the dangers and consequences of failing to wear safety gear, particularly helmets while snowboarding and skiing. The Foundation promotes safety and brain injury prevention to children and adults engaged in all sports, but primarily focused pediatric rehabilitation.
We know what the problems are. The 11 Foundation is interested in solutions. The 11 Foundation was formed in an effort to make a difference and help support effective, project driven charities that are really making a difference in Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation & Recovery and educating both children and adults about helmet safety while participating in any activity, but specifically snowboarding or skiing.
